Transition Homes
Transition homes are at the heart of Brighter Path’s mission. Transition homes are small houses or flats where care leavers can live rent-free and in safety for several months after leaving their orphanages.
Leaving an orphanage is very challenging and for some even traumatising. A transition home provides a stepping stone to the outside world. These are safe and supportive environments where a care leaver has the opportunity to learn the vital skills required to flourish. Here they are taught to care for themselves as individuals. Care leavers live in small groups and together learn to cook, keep house and to budget.
In a transition home young care leavers start going to work every day, or attend further education or vocational training. They develop a daily routine and self-discipline including going to bed on time, shopping for food and cleaning their own home. They have the opportunity to start saving money so that in time they will have funds for a deposit for their own rented accommodation.
Most importantly though, these transition homes provide companionship. The boys and girls have someone they can talk to about their day, share a joke with or share a problem. From these simple beginnings they are able to imagine their own future, independent lives.
