Everyone in Sri Lanka is affected. But in an economic crisis it is always the poor who suffer the most. Care leavers are particularly vulnerable because they are more likely to be in low paid jobs and do not have the same wider family networks to fall back on in times of hardship.
Brighter Path is increasing its monthly financial support to care leavers in education and training to make sure that they have enough to eat and are able to pay increasing travel costs. Brighter Path is has also been providing extra monthly financial support to many care leavers in low paid work to help meet the ever rising cost of food and transport.
Like all other Sri Lankans the care leavers in Brighter Path transition homes now must cook outdoors on open fires because of the difficulty in getting gas. The greatest challenge however continues to be the price of food with prices currently rising at 57%. We are constantly reviewing the situation to make sure that needs are met in a rapidly evolving situation.
