Sports
Elite Athlete
For the last 5 months Brighter Path has been supporting Sandun, an elite athlete and a care leaver. When he was young Sandun always excelled at athletics and showed enormous talent. He frequently won school competitions and small regional events. However, with no family to encourage him and provide the necessary investment Sandun managed his expectations and put his aspirations to become an athlete to one side. When Sandun joined Brighter Path we discussed with him at length his dream to become an athlete. We are always striving to bridge the opportunity gap for care leavers and provide them with the same support as their own family would. Brighter Path recognises that to become an elite sportsperson takes a huge amount of discipline and will-power, as well as teamwork skills. Sports encourages a healthy lifestyle and is a great way to channel emotions (even trauma) and encourage positive mental health. With the support of Brighter Path Sandun resumed his training earlier this year and he has since been promoted to train and compete at national level! We are also very proud that he is successfully pursuing his academic studies alongside this.
